Gum Disease Treatment in Plano, TX

Deep cleaning and ongoing care to stop gum disease.

Periodontics is the area of dentistry focused on preventing, diagnosing and treating gum disease. Healthy gums hold your teeth in place, and treating gum disease early is one of the best ways to keep your natural teeth for life.

Periodontal (gum) disease

Gum disease affects nearly half of American adults over 30, according to the CDC, and it’s a leading cause of tooth loss in adults. It starts with plaque bacteria that attack the gums and supporting tissues, and it can eventually lead to bone loss. Warning signs include:

  • Gums that are red, swollen, tender or bleed easily
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste
  • Teeth that shift, loosen, separate or no longer fit together the same way

Factors that contribute to gum disease include tobacco use, poor oral hygiene, family history, crooked teeth, pregnancy, diabetes and some medications. The good news is that when it’s caught early, gum disease can be treated, and even reversed, before it causes lasting damage.

Our hygienists are skilled at detecting and treating gum disease, and regular cleanings are your best protection.

Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning)

Scaling and root planing is the primary treatment for gum disease. When plaque and tartar have built up deeper below the gum line than a regular cleaning can reach, your hygienist will recommend this deep cleaning. Using specialized instruments, they remove the buildup that keeps your gums from attaching firmly to the tooth root. That lets the gums heal and reattach, protecting against further bacteria and stopping more damage to your teeth and bone.

A local anesthetic is usually used to keep you comfortable, and you may have some tenderness afterward. Your hygienist will give you home-care tips to help you heal. Once treatment is complete, Dr. Kevin will check whether any further periodontal treatment is needed.

Ongoing gum care

Gum health affects your whole body. Studies have linked gum disease with heart disease, stroke and diabetes. A soft tissue management plan aims to clear infection, inflammation, deep pockets and bleeding so you can keep your gums healthy for good. It typically includes:

  • A thorough periodontal exam, including measuring pocket depths
  • Deep cleaning below the gum line
  • Rinsing the treated areas with medication
  • More frequent cleanings
  • A long-term home care routine

Treated early, gum disease can be stopped and kept under control. Floss City Dental uses proven periodontal treatments to give you fresher breath and healthier gums and teeth.
